Carmarthen Bay Film Festival 2022

“The life we live is a series of illusions… a fleeting smile… mistaken decisions… dangerous, unpredictable… yet, we will meet again, as lovers… parents… children… and you will know who I am…” Tasos Sagris’s poem, with its haunting soundtrack by Whodoes, offers us an extended exploration of lives lived in parallel, at cross-purposes, in and out of love, around the world, from the innocence of children to the wisdom of elders. There are the good times when summer seems to last forever, and the bad, when persecution and misadventure could land us in prison, with nothing but rain to hear our voice. But what is the reality? What is mere illusion? Can there be more to life than simply living?

The Life We Live Is Not Life Itself

Two young sisters travel alone for a beauty pageant, their fraught relationship is tested. Miss Nothing is an intimate and tender portrait of sisterhood—inspired by true stories often forgotten behind extravagant shows.

"I see them and look them away ... see stinger-ray hide in bush ... climb for a better view ... afraid of spider-snake-lizard ... we watched them watched us ... "
An after-image is the residual image you see if you look away having stared at a brightly lit scene. It is a negative of the original and gradually fades away... something like a ghost.

The film "Details" is a hybrid of video and poetry, whose languages overlap. Both art genres complement each other by creating a synergy. In doing so they meet in a common inner and outer landscape.
It narrates a movement that starts with an injury and leads to astonishment.

"this time, this place... beyond open circulation closed reciprocity... closed hydration spheres wrought cast smithed... this is what we are what we eat ... "

Iron is the most common metal on earth. Indeed, it forms much of the molten core of the planet which in turn generates the earth’s magnetic poles. The red soils of the world are due to iron. At a biochemical level, iron is essential for human life, amongst other things, making our blood red. In the societal domain, iron is essential for manufacturing, electricity generation, and much more. Certain bacteria can derive energy for life directly from dissolved iron compounds (“rust”) rather than from oxygen as we do. Perhaps, at some time in the future, we, our descendants, the Ferrovores, may need to do the same.

The Ferrovores

The documentary ‘Harbour Lights’ tells the remarkable story of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild and the lives of seafarers at a time when the maritime industry was the lifeblood of global connection. It focusses on Melbourne’s iconic Mission to Seafarers building, its connection to the First World War and to a unique community of ships crew and volunteers.

Close to graduating his twelve month rehab stay, Andrew gives his testimony to churchgoers. When the congregation seem to judge him harshly, a shattered Andrew makes plans to slip away from the residential rehab and back to drugs.

But Rob, the teenager assigned to Andrew's care, uncovers his best friend's ruinous plan and stages a frightening coup to save Andrew.

If I Quit Now

Prudence and Roger meet for the first time. After asking him a series of unusual qualifying questions, we see them begin a temporary "relationship”, leading to the saving of a life and the ending of another. Pete’s Valve is a kooky, dark comedy about duty under duress, missed connections, and the metaphorical, as well as physical placement of the human heart.

Pete's Valve

Self Isolation follows the day to day struggle of a young woman during the first few weeks of Melbourne's stage 3 lockdown. The boredom and loneliness soon get to her and she begins to lose her grip on reality. Between her neighbours' constant fighting and the possibility of the Coronavirus living in her closet, it all becomes too much.

Self Isolation

Three interwoven stories
explore the mysterious
nature of space-time: a
weary traveler named
Andy searches for the
illusive Einstein-Rosen
Bridge; a trapped artist
named Lyssa struggles to create the perfect galaxy; and an antiquities investigator named Diana inspects a dangerous work of art that infects the minds of its viewers.

Triptych

A comedic exploration of the disconnect between people and their food. Two extremist vegans accidentally kill an animal after being attacked by it. They realise they have acquired a secret passion for the thrill of the kill. A story flipping the steak on traditional veganism, asking; 'is it more humane to die becoming art than to die and be eaten?'

Vegan Hunters

The film records a day of Akebaierjiang, an Uyghur young man living in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, China, whose life shifts between a passionate popping dancer and an ER doctor. This film aims to present the struggle and balance between being responsible for a steady job in a real life and pursuing a dream.
